Easter Sunday we headed to Utah.
Our first stop was just North of Flagstaff, AZ.
This is the mountain you see as you travel near Flagstaff, AZ.

We were amazed by the lava flow.
It went on for miles and miles as we drove towards the volcano.
Then we got to the volcano called Sunset Crater.
It is one of the youngest volcanoes in the U.S. and it erupted sometime bewtween 1080 -1150 AD.

After looking around we headed out of the park and we entered the
Wupatki National Monument.
The ancient Pueblo people had many settlement sites in this area. We stopped at a few. The first was Wukoki Pueblo Ruin.
Down the road a bit is The Citadel Ruin.

Beautiful set of photos! Malpias are amazing. It’s surprising anything can grow in them. We have some large lava flows in NM that I visit about every 10 years or so, and there is more vegetation on them each time I visit. The lava rock in the construction is interesting. I don’t believe I have seen lava rock used in the pueblo, red rock construction before.
I had not either… but it was incorporated in The Citadel Ruins…

We’ve never stopped at the crater but have driven by it numerous times. Looks interesting. I’m heading to the Botanical Garden on Tuesday (freebie day) to photograph the blooming saguaros. Let me know if you’d like to join me. I look forward to hearing about the rest of your trip 🙂

We really enjoyed Sunset Crater Volcano area. I was still teaching at the time and my students enjoyed the photos from the area. We were on a Motorcycle trip at the time.
The Wukoki ruins are neat:) It is amazing how many ruins there are in the corner area. We love hiking to ruins and being able to walk around all alone. I just wish people were more considerate.
Yes the ruins throughout AZ are truly amazing. I am going to post another kind of Native American ruin on my next post. Oh then there are the rock pit ruins and the cliff dwellings. It’s unbelievable how many different settlements there are right here in AZ.
