Happy Mother’s Day to All! So how about a trip to Maui!
You will enjoy Maui. It has a true island feel to it …Along with lots of vegetation changes. With the above capture we are at sea level. Gorgeous! However, we can’t stay we need to drive up to 10,300 ft. ! Grab a jacket you’re going to need it!
Lush, green mountains and the beautiful sea surround us for about an hour.
The ocean becomes a distant memory as we ascend.
Our GPS shows us that we are in for a ride! Constant curves and turns though green fields at first.
Then trees line our drive.
22 miles of more winding road until we get to Haleakala Crater. (This volcano is dormant unlike the one that is causing problems on the big island.)
As we continue to climb …Once again the vegetation changes.
Lava lined hills on either side of us.
The volcano is in our sight!
There were plenty of craters within the crater.
Don’t Jump!
These plants were everywhere.
These plants are called Silversword and grow tall. They are striking as they appear silver on the dark landscape. They are an endangered species.
Of course a selfie has to be taken!
The views were stunning to say the least! It was windy and cold so the descent begins. Back down the curved roads, through the changing vegetation and then a stop along the way to see some beautiful gardens.
Of course we need to try some Maui Craft Beer while we view the majestic gardens.
Avocados that are huge!
We believe these are smaller ones… ??
It’s not long until we reach the Maui Beaches.
We return our rental and our shuttle takes us back to the harbor.
This is one very large tree… a Banyan Tree. It covers the entire park area.
The line for the tender boats is crazy long so I decide I have not tried a Mai Tai yet! So off we go to watch the people stand and wait while we sit and relax.
The Mai Tai was good but a bit too sweet for me. I can say I tried one!
Here is our tender and back to the ship we go! It’s been a long but fabulous day!
The various greens remind me of Ireland – lush for sure. Good thing you visited before the recent volcano issues. Happy Mother’s Day to you too. 🙂
Maui was very green and when driving through the rolling hills I thought perhaps Ireland looked like this.
Yes. We were there one week before it erupted. Lucky to have seen it! Praying for the Big Island !

Maui was beautiful. We went two years ago. Seeing all the pictures made me nostalgic! Haleakala was amazing for sure:) We also squeezed in a trip to the lavendar field which was a pretty cool sight!:) Enjoy the rest of your trip!👍🏼☀️

Agreed! The volcano on the big island that is causing so much damage has pretty much been an active volcano for a long time. It got shake up from those earthquakes.

Thanks for the journey to the top of the volcano. We made it half way up once, but for some reason turned around and had to head back…can’t remember why (sick kid????) but being the curious type have always wondered what the crater looked like. Have visited the one on the Big Island a few times…has been lava flowing slowly for years and we could see the difference between the visits…nothing like what is going on now or what might still be coming….just had friends do the island hopping cruise…enjoy!

It’s sad what’s happening on the big island. It started erupting a bit more, then usual, when we were there. A week after we were home the earthquakes came and then it ALL started. It’s been sad to watch.

My dear wife Karen and I did the Pride of America ship tour in 2010, Nance, and loved every second of it. Maui, Hilo, Kauai, Kona, back to where we started in Honolulu. So thrilling and beautiful it was. I see you guys are enjoying all aspects of our 50th state. Yay you!

Yes! So very sad!
The big island is just that…big. The “mess is on the southern part of the island.”
They will heal… but it will take time. That volcano and Pele (the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who lives in Kilauea. Hawaiian have many element God’s or spirits that they believe in) is letting us know … it’s real. Don’t mess with me Pele is saying.
We love Maui and have visited a couple of times. We cycled down from the top of the volcano. Those fat fitter cycle up! Happy travels and sail on!

We saw lots of bikers coming down from the Volcano including one who was “side saddling” and with No Hands. Oh, AND No Helmet. Good Golly what an idiot. One tiny little mishap could have cost him his life. He was leading a pack of about 15 cyclists who ALL had their helmets on and were riding correctly.
That decline is a scary ride all on its own… why mess with it.
