Tuesday Tidbits #53 ~You Either Love It or You Hate It

What is it… you ask!

CRANBERRY SAUCE!

We love it! However, I am not a fan of the stuff in the can. The first time I cooked Thanksgiving I used canned cranberry sauce. I said never again… and found this recipe. Homemade Cranberry Sauce is better in my opinion because of it’s sweet/tart taste and its texture.

Here is the easy recipe I found years ago in the Food Magazine ~Taste of Home.

The ingredients are simple to gather. Everything is in your pantry except for the apple and cranberries.

A heavy medium sized pot is a must.

Pour 3/4 cup of water in the pot and add 3/4 cup of sugar. Bring to a boil so that the sugar dissolves.

I use a silicone spatula to stir. It is perfect as it scrapes the sides of the pot and it can withstand the heat.

Wash your cranberries and remove any bad ones, sticks and/or stems.

After the sugar has dissolved its time to add all of your cranberries. Add them to your hot sugar water all at once.

Bring them back up to a boil. The cranberries will start to pop. Hear them pop in the following short video.

After they are done popping, add 1 diced apple along with 1 tsp. nutmeg (freshly grated is best) and 1 tsp. cinnamon. (1 tsp. of vanilla can be added as well …it’s optional) Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer for 15-20 minutes. Stir frequently to help ensure that the mixture does not burn. Sometimes adding another 1/4 cup or so of water helps the mixture from sticking to the pan.

After about 15 minutes or so… your mixture should look thick and the apples should be cooked and soft.

Let the mixture cool down in pan. After it is somewhat cooled… pour into a bowl or serving container. Let the cranberry sauce cool even more …uncovered on your kitchen counter. Then when it’s finally cool …cover and place in refrigerator. This makes about 2 1/2 cups.

So… do you like cranberry sauce? Have you made it? What do you add to yours? Raisins? Walnuts? Orange Zest? Maple Syrup? Honey? I would love to hear! If you have never made it before I hope you give this a try for your Thanksgiving Feast!

Thanks for reading another edition of Tuesday Tidbits!

  1. Nancy, I love the home-made and have made it several times and it was only eaten by me. I do add orange to mine. My sweet Daddy loves the canned, so I already have it in my pantry. Can you believe no one else in my family likes cranberries? The popping of your cranberries is music to my ears!

    Happy Thanksgiving dear friend! 🦃

    1. Pam… we truly are kindred spirits. My father in law loved the canned and I always had it in the pantry as well. I have put Orange Zest in mine but only if I have an Orange in the fridge. Lol!

Happy Thanksgiving my Alabama Friend! 🦃

  2. Growing up we always had the canned sauce, those rings make me flinch today! I love homemade cranberry sauce, it’s easy to make and I’ll have to try it with apple next time! Enjoy the holiday Nancy!
