Tuesday Tidbits #256 January Marches On!

It’s Tuesday Again! Wow!

Another week has flown by. Did it fly by for you too?

January Marches On!

Happy Birthday Sweet Man!

Happy Birthday!

We were busy preparing for a birthday party for sweet man and two of our friends. We had 28 people here at the house, and even though everyone brings something to share, it takes coordination on our part to make it all run smoothly. Cleaning house, setting up tables and chairs, smoking a pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches, and picking up the delicious Costco birthday cake are all something we do to get the party ready. It’s a good busy!

And let’s not forget… we also took a trip out into the desert. You can say we didn’t ease into January. We welcomed January in full force!

Getting out in the desert with friends is so enjoyable!
We always enjoy seeing windmills in the desert.
I loved this black peak!
I am so happy we live among the Saguaros!

When we set out on our desert trip, we encountered a passing rain/windstorm for about 20 minutes. The wind blew in quite a few tumbleweeds! It was an incredible sight to witness! I hope you can click on the video below.

Some were even larger!

New Year Resolutions?

Do you make New Year’s resolutions?

As January marches on… I am not the person who chooses a word for the year or makes New Year’s resolutions. However, I do enjoy setting goals to get a few projects done, writing in my journal more often where I can reflect, trying to stick to healthy eating, and also trying to add a few more books to my yearly book list. I am active enough, and I am content with my life, especially my life with sweet man. So, this program of mine works. I understand there is always room for improvement, and I will be open-minded to anything that will bring freshness to my old ideals.

How about you? Resolutions? Goals?

Our Desert Gardens

With January in full swing… the month can bring cold temps across the nation. We, too, are impacted. The temps got below the 30s this past week. Our lantanas and bougainvilleas froze. January marched upon them! We are sad, but as soon as the threat of cold temps is gone, we will trim the bushes, and their beauty will return in time.

Currently, our tree is bare and will get its leaves again next month. The lantana is brown as well as the bougainvillea. My Sweet Man says… “It’s Winter in the Desert and it will all come back.” It’s true. This has happened before. But I miss the bright colors the flowers bring.

Wildlife

A Road runner without his tuft up. I took this with my cell phone and he did not mind how close I got to him.

Before I sign off I needed to share with you the wildlife sightings in our back yard. This Roadrunner has been in our backyard often this past week. It wants my hummingbirds and or goldfinches!

Their usual menu items of lizards and snakes are hibernating so little birds are next on the menu. They do eat small rodents and insects as well

I went out on the patio and made a quick turn, and I almost tripped on the Roadrunner. It is not fearful of me. I clap my hands to make him move on. Usually, they are fast and move away quickly. Not this one… it is not frightened of me. It’s always fun to see but please leave my birds alone!

That’s Not All Folks!

A few days ago, I went out to feed my Hummingbirds, and a Bobcat came out of a bush 3 feet away from me. When he saw me he leaped up to the top of the wall and into our back neighbor’s yard. Let’s just say my heart was beating faster than usual. I was startled and he was startled, but if it had a litter, it would have come after me.

Then a few days later the Bobcat came back again!

They sure are beautiful! It looks comfortable sitting in our yard, doesn’t it? UNBELIEVABLE!

Wild Bobcat in our yard.

Thank You!

That’s all I have for you this week.

As I always try to convey… we certainly appreciate all of you. Thanks for joining us for another Tuesday Tidbits.

We wish all of you a wonderful week ahead. Whatever you have planned… make every day count and be thankful for your Blessings!

  1. What a full, festive and exciting week, Nance. I’ll start with my birthday wishes to Sweet Man and continue on to amazement of your backyard Roadrunner and Bobcat encounters. Wildlife surely comes to you during the desert winter!

  2. Good morning, Nancy from an icy cold Alabama! Happy birthday to your Sweet Man! It sounds like he had a wonderful party with a crowd of 28 people. That is quite a group to prepare for even with help from others! I always enjoy your rides in the desert and the tumbleweeds are amazing! I have never seen a roadrunner before but we do have bobcats. Yikes I don’t want to see one that close. I always enjoy visiting you my friend. Stay warm ❤️

    1. Be glad I didn’t share the video of me laughing so hard over the ones hitting our truck.
Thanks for the visit, dear Dorothy!

  3. Wow — the bobcat would be a tad disconcerting! It’s hard to know if he is more afraid of you than you of him, but who wants to test it out? And I hope your birds continue to do well in a predatory winter. My friends wintering in AZ say you are getting colder temperatures right now and I hope you stay cozy! I’m a word of the year person, but that word guides my year, which in a way is a loose resolution! This year it is “Action.”

The birthday party sounds like loads of fun. The cake is charming and I know it was a delightful occasion. Onward to a new week!

    1. Yes! We are marching onward!
Your word is a great word! It will have you doing many things I am sure.
We do get a cold snap here in AZ during January. It’s going to be 77 in a few days.
Stay warm my friend! And thank you always for your kindness!

  4. Happy Birthday to Sweet Man! Sounds like you had quite a party, what fun! I love seeing photos of your beautiful land, with cacti and the mountains~those tumbleweeds were crazy! As always you are enjoying life to the fullest! Watch out for those bobcats, yikes!
    Jenna

  5. I agree that January is flying by and it’s been busy for us so far as well. I love the bobcat sighting, although it would certainly be a bit disconcerting. Nice that it came back so you could get a photo. Hopefully you have no small pets it might think of as snacks!

The birthday (happy belated to SM) sounds like fun. I don’t usually make NY’s resolutions. Right now I’m trying each day to sort a drawer or box or pack a box so that when the house renovation is finished and we have to move, I’ll be somewhat ready. Trying to get rid of things I don’t like, don’t use, don’t really need, or need to be tossed. That and blogging keeps me busy enough. I’m going on a women’s retreat this weekend and helping with the Mesa coin show the next and then it will be February. Yikes!

  6. What a wonderful party you must have had Nancy and a belated happy birthday to Sweet Man! I don’t believe we have bobcats here in Florida but we did living in New Mexico, along with the road runners. We do have panthers or mountian lions or pumas depending on your preference description and they are considered endangered so the count is small and they do show up unexpectedly which can be a fright. It seemed odd to me when we moved down here that we would have panthers and bears along with the alligators but tis true. Toss in the not-native pythons and it is definitely a jungle out there. 🥴
Have a wonderful New Year my friend.

  7. What a WILD week you have had from tumbleweeds to critters in your backyard! It seems like many of us are having unseasonably cold weather. Your 77 degrees is going to be delightful. Have a great week!

    1. WILD indeed! Wait until you hear about the temps we are enduring this week!THank you for your sweet comments always! Happy Trails to You!

  8. Happy Birthday to your Sweet Man and Oh My Gosh, how did those tumbleweeds not sweep you away with them? I don’t do resolutions or pick words either, but rather, like you, I also like to set goals. After lining my pantry shelves with contact last year, my goal this year is to cover the shelves of all of my cabinetry. I’ve done the rest of the kitchen and now I just need to attack the laundry, linen and bathrooms cupboards.

    1. The roadrunner is always a delight to see! As for the Bobcats… they are so beautiful from afar! Thanks for the visit. Happy Trails to you!

  9. Wow, you had my heart stopping at the end. It is beautiful. I’ve never seen one so close. Your saguaro picture is lovely. The sky is brilliant. Happy birthday to your sweet man. That’s a big birthday party. I’m going to link this post to my family of WQ commenters. Have a wonderful week, and, if you can make it, see you on the 24th.

  10. Hi Nancy, I couldn’t comment from my phone on yours and several blogs this morning without being prompted to log in to WP, but I’m in San Diego now and can use my laptop! I love all your images and happy birthday to your hubby! January is a popular month for birthdays (both of my daughters are Jan babies. Isn’t this AZ weather crazy? I sure didn’t expect freezing temps and didn’t pack enough cold weather clothing (any excuse to shop, right?) How amazing and a bit scary to see a bobcat so close. The same thing happened at my brother’s home a few days ago–a bobcat and her three kits were sitting next to their garage. I didn’t see that, but moments later I looked out the window and saw mama sitting on a rock at the wash. I managed an OK pic and will share it another time.
Just so you know, although I follow many blogs, I don’t get email notifications from those who are self-hosted even though I’ve subscribed to yours and several others that way. WP still has work to do. I’m glad you stopped by to comment on Wednesday’s post. Did Marsha invite you to our blog lunch next week? Hope to see you.

    1. Hi Terri! I hear ya about subscriptions. And the whole log in process is a pain!
I’m glad you still found me!
Enjoy the rest of your vacay!

  11. Happy Birthday to your sweet man! I celebrated one this month too. Love the pictures of the road runner and the bobcat. We don’t have them in these parts.

  12. “How about you? Resolutions?”
My new year’s resolution is always the same: not to make any at all. This I can always keep easily! 😉

  13. Happy Birthday to Sweet Man and it sounds like it was a fabulous party. I love the video of the tumbleweed. When I took a class on plants and trees years ago, they told us if the trees here lost their leaves not to panic because they have two sets of leaves. I wonder if that is the same with your trees too? After that they said they won’t regrow. Your backyard is beautiful and evidently the critters think so too! They know where the kindest lady in the neighborhood lives! That would scare the daylight out of me to see a bobcat in my yard.

  14. Happy birthday, and beautiful post out in our desert! But wow to have a bobcat in your yard. Fantastic. It is cute. My husband saw one with two kittens about a month ago and I went out searching for them without luck. So great. Beautiful pictures.
