U-Turns
Since I’ve known sweet man, he’s become famous for always turning around to check something out whenever we go on road trips! Because of that, we have seen some fantastic sights and gone on tremendous adventures. We did that a few times on our journey to North Dakota a few weeks ago. We all giggled whenever the car turned around. By the way, if you missed my last post please click here to see our 50th state achieved and views of Mackinac Island!
As we were driving he spotted a little sign that read, “Horseshoe Falls, Turn Here!” Of course, he couldn’t resist and turned around right there!
Horseshoe Falls
Munising, Michigan
The waterfall was beautiful, and we had such a nice time walking up to see it! Even though it was a bit chilly, we really enjoyed the stroll.
It ended up being a lovely area with a large gnome garden.
The water from the Falls emptied into the above pond. I believe the overflow most likely goes onto Lake Superior. This pond was filled with pretty big rainbow trout and quite a few Mallards. For .50 cents, we fed the trout and the ducks.

Sunset over Lake Superior
That evening sweet man took us on an adventure down to the shores of Lake Superior in search of Yooper Rocks!
We ended up finding some, and we were also treated to a stunning sunset over Lake Superior! What a lovely sight!
The large boulder that sat in the lake had a fun blow hole! Please watch the video below to see it and the sunset.
Another U-Turn
Once again, Sweet Man made another U-turn after seeing a sign for homemade Amish Donuts! Have you ever had one? Oh my goodness, they are delicious! The glazed and cream-filled ones are pretty large and can be shared between two people. And so we did it again, we turned around.
We had a lovely chat with the Amish folks selling donuts. It turns out they recently moved from Ohio to the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. What’s even more fun is that they used to be neighbors with our Amish friends who built our sunroom! Small world, isn’t it? We had a great time chatting with them while enjoying their yummy donuts!
Another U-Turn was for gas and a photo-op!
Pull Over
This was not a U-Turn, but we pulled over to see the gorgeous wild Lupines growing on the side of the road. Many of these blooms were a foot tall! Seeing them for miles and miles on both sides of the road was such a joy.
Another pull-over was to see Paul Bunyan.
Side Trip
Have you ever heard of Frankenmuth, Michigan? The town is well known for its Bavarian Style, and there is a large place dedicated to Everything Christmas.
We stopped and stayed overnight here.

Exactly! It was an incredible trip! If you missed my last post I shared that we made it to North Dakota as it was our 50th state! I also shared Mackinac Island. It was a great road trip!

Nancy, I love the way you and Sweet Man travel! There are so many fun things to see when you take your time and make those turns on the side roads. The waterfalls are beautiful. I’m glad you’ve explored some of our state! (Sorry about the roads.) Did you go to Bronners in Frankenmuth? It’s massive! I think you may have seen more the UP than I have! (And you probably went right by the cottage on your way north from Frankenmuth! Or south toward Frankenmuth!) I love a good road trip and I love that you have maxed it out along the way. Why rush when there is so much to see?!
I saw Bronners but two tour busses were in the parking lot. So we passed on going in.
Your state is gorgeous! We enjoyed it very much.

You and Sweet Man always go on such fun road trips~ it’s not the destination, it’s the journey! The falls are beautiful and I love the adorable gnomes in the garden! The Lake Superior video was beautiful and Frankenmuth looks alike a place in a Hallmark movie! Happy 4th!

I am married to one of “those” who turns around while on a road trip. It is not as easy in our motorhome as it is in a car which is why we tow a jeep so the Captain can get his “fix” of exploring and discovering new places. LOL. You are right Nancy, one sees the most beautiful and interesting things. The blow hole in the rock was interesting, thanks for the video and the water fall and surrounding areas delightful. What gorgeous U-turns, Nancy! Amish donuts sound delicious. The sunset was so amazing. We are constantly chasing a sunset around our lakes! I love seeing the falls and the gnome village. How I wish we could grow lupines! I love seeing the photos from your trip, anticipating more, my friend!

The falls was an excellent detour, that’s for sure. I have a hard time turning back or even stopping sometimes, as once I get started for the day, I’m on a mission to arrive as quickly as possible. But I’ve gotten much better at stopping and grabbing those cool little moments and detours. The last time I came home from Wyoming, I made a point of stopping in Blanding, Utah and visiting Bear Ears National Monument. Although an incoming storm cut my time short and I couldn’t find the dinosaur footprints, I accidentally discovered a marvelous cliff dwelling. You never know.
Through Sweet Man, I have learned that the destination will come, but there is beauty in between. He is also famous for saying, “This might be blog material.”
It was wonderful to hear from you. Are you headed to Wyoming anytime soon?
I love the way you travel! It sounds like so much fun! You got to see some great stuff. If you ever make it up this way again you need to visit Bronners. Plan on at least half a day there. 🙂

There were two large tour buses in the parking lot, and we had quite a few miles to drive that day, so we did not go in. Perhaps next time.

It absolutely is! It is a huge place so I doubt the two tour buses of people would have made it crowded, but you really want to have a lot of time to enjoy it. I’m glad you enjoyed your Michigan visit.

How fun! We need to be better about turning around! I’m sure we’ve missed out by being too set on our destinations. We know better, but we need to do better. Thanks for the inspiration! Oh Nancy, you’ve made such really are lucky to be married to your Sweet Man, who is so adventurous. We lived in Ohio and would camp with our kids in Amish country, and we also lived in Michigan before moving to Texas and went to Frankenmuth. You sure have a fun life and I enjoyed your video!
