Never a Dull Moment
There is never a dull moment in our Arizona yard—something is always visiting!
This morning, I woke to the steady hooting of a Great Horned Owl. Such a peaceful way to start the day. They have been in our yard on many different occasions.
We even had a Western Screech Owl. At first, I thought he was a juvenile Great Horned Owl, but after some research, I saw it was a Western Screech Owl.
All Kinds of Critters
Over time, we’ve had quite the variety of visitors— Bobcats have passed through.
Roadrunners dart about.
We have seen hawks soaring overhead and then land in our yard.
One of our favorites is watching the Gamble quail families, especially when their tiny peeps scurry along behind them.

Speaking of eggs. We now have Mourning Dove eggs in our backyard. Mom got frightened when I was trimming a bush. She came right back after I took this picture.
Another Mourning Dove has a nest in our Ramada.
When Momma leaves to fetch food I look in at the baby. There is only one in this nest and it will be leaving the nest soon. It’s getting bigger.
Not Only Hummingbirds
Not only do Hummingbirds enjoy our feeders but so do other birds.
Let’s Not Forget
We can’t forget the lizards who are always keeping busy in the sunshine. We often see them do push-ups. I read mostly males do push-ups to show dominance and to attract a mate.
Yesterday Morning
True Story
And as if that wasn’t enough excitement, yesterday morning a coyote casually strolled right down our front sidewalk! When I hurried out to catch a glimpse, he was already rounding the corner. But wouldn’t you know it— right there in the middle of the street, stood a roadrunner! I couldn’t help but think of Wile E. Coyote from the old Road Runner cartoons. Sweet Man and I had a good laugh. Do you think the Roadrunner said “Beep, Beep?”
Wild Donkeys have been known to be in the neighborhood as well. I kid you not. When it gets too dry in the desert they come to the pocket parks to find grass to eat.

Did you have any pets?
Oh yes! While growing up we always had a dog or a cat or both. I remember my Dad always bringing home a pet and my Mom had no idea he was going to. He probably did this because he knew she would say no to a pet. We had several cats. One was named Morris and he was so affectionate and loving. I remember Heidi the dachshund, Cuddles the Dalmatian and Sam the poodle mix. But My Dog was Bunky. I brought him home when I was in highschool and Mom and Dad loved him from the start! My kids had a beautiful yellow lab named Bailey. They got to choose her from a litter and they loved her and helped take good care of her. Sweet Man had several spaniels that he loved. But he also had a rabbit that he took good care of for several years. We loved our pets!

Life here keeps us on our toes and fills our days with little surprises. We love living here.
It seems our yard has become quite the wildlife destination—and we never know who might show up next! Life here is never dull, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

You do indeed have a wildlife zoo, Nancy! I love it. Well, all except the coyote. They have killed several of my cats here at home over the years. I am not a fan. I have never seen other birds at my hummingbird feeders—so cool! I’d love to see those Gambel quail! You do have wonderful neighbors!
I am glad that coyote went passing by! Here in the desert everyone has indoor cats and dogs. All because of the owls, Bobcats and coyotes. I am so sorry you lost your cats. So sad.
I think the birds all enjoy the hummingbird feeders because in the desert it’s hard to find water.

I can surely understand why your pets are kept in. We keep ours in at night, though the cats have slipped by us. The coyotes seem to roam. We haven’t heard them at night in a good while. Rarely do we see them—thank goodness, as I worry about my senior miniature horses too. Around here they have been known to take out calves as well. Happy Tuesday, Nancy!🌷🪻🪻

I love all the beautiful wildlife you have featured Nancy…altho, we have had large owls swoop down and pick up kittens and cats when we lived in N.M. sad! I think the most interesting visitor we had while living in the high mountain desert was a panther…he was huge and at night when he/she screamed it actually sounded like a woman. Here in Florida we have our little burrowing owls that are so cute (about 6 inches tall) but are endangered so once they make a burrow on your property, they are there forever and a $25,000.00 fine if you disturb them. Good morning Nancy! It looks like a zoo at your house. You have some amazing photos! We have bobcats and coyotes, but they rarely are seen in the daylight hours. Butch has them on his trail cameras almost daily. Our coyotes are fat compared to the one in your yard, he/she was obviously looking for food. Your owl captures are definitely awesome. We don’t have roadrunners, but our grands love to watch Wile E. Coyote and the roadrunner. They laugh and laugh at those old episodes made in the 1950’s. Hi, oh this was a fun post. I love seeing all the critters visiting you. When my husband and I first got married we lived in a cabin in the woods. We had a bobcat with her four kittens walk right along our deck.
