Tuesday Tidbits #343 This Is It!

Today is the Last Day of September

This is it—our last day to enjoy September! But don’t worry, October is pretty wonderful too because it’s my Birthday Month!

I may want a cake like this one again. It was irresistible and full of chocolate chips!

It won’t be long when there is “Frost on the Punkin!” The days are shorter and the nights are cooler. It’s cozy time!

As we awaken in the morning, we tend to pull up the blankets closer to our chins, as the furnace has not been turned on yet. I am wearing a brand-new flannel nightgown to keep me warm, and we definitely Hurkle Durkle more this time of year. Do you, Hurkle Durkle? You can read more about what Hurkle Durkle is here in one of my posts from last year. 😊

Fall Cleaning and Yellow Jackets

We were away on two trips for most of September, so this house was dusty. I’ve started some fall cleaning and even washed the windows! The windows were dirtier than usual due to a Yellow Jacket nest in the eaves of our house. Every time they landed on the windows, they left a smudge. By the way, after trying everything, we had professionals come and take care of the Yellow Jacket nest.

Remember, yellow jackets are not pollinators! They are horrible pests!

We used Mosquito Assassin Pest Control to take care of our Yellow Jacket nest.

I also learned that Yellow Jackets eat other insects, bugs, and caterpillars. All of our monarch caterpillars disappeared because of the horrible yellow jackets!

Monarch caterpillar.

Next year, I will collect and protect the caterpillars in a mesh cage. I’ll give them butterfly weed and whatever else they need.

Here is one of the good guys. A honey bee! Our Asters are full of them.

Asters are about the only thing still blooming. The gardens are pretty much finished and I deadheaded all the flowers. Some of our potted plants are hanging in there but in a few weeks they will be out at the roadside for garbage collection.

Boating

We finally got a chance to enjoy the lake, and the weather has been simply gorgeous! It’s such a beautiful spot to admire the colorful leaves against the clear blue sky. Some trees have changed more than others but it’s such a joy to witness the transition. Today I heard that because of our lack of rain the fall colors will be shortened. Some trees are dropping their leaves sooner then usual.

We weren’t the only ones on the lake.

Near our boat’s dock, there’s a lovely patch of goldenrod that truly captures the spirit of Autumn.

More Fall Sights

It’s time for us to collect the chestnuts that fall on the ground near us. Do you like chestnuts?

We wait until they fall to the ground. No need to touch their thorny casing.

While driving through the countryside, we noticed the soybean fields had turned golden.

Pumpkin patches are popping up all around.

Book Recommendation

I could not put this book down—it’s a fabulous book! It’s historical fiction set in 1789 about Midwife Martha Ballard. Author Arial Lawhon was emboldened by the real Martha Ballard and the journal she kept. I would definitely put this on your must-read list.

Thank You!

That’s all I have for you this week. Wishing you a wonderful last day of September!

As I always try to convey, we certainly appreciate all of you. Thank you for joining us for another Tuesday Tidbits.

  1. Similar weather here, and you are right that a lot of leaves are just turning brown and dropping due to the drought. My asters are looking good too, and that’s a good thing because the rest of the beds are pretty bare of color. Yellow Jackets are definitely to be avoided. They are dangerous. Enjoy your boating and October.

    1. The drought has become quite severe here. No rain in sight for days upon days.
Thanks for the visit and its always so good to hear from you! I was so jealous that you and Dorothy got to meet! How wonderful for the both of you!
      Happy October!

  2. Beautiful signs of fall and lake views Nancy! We’re still feeling the heat of summer here in NC and are in need of rain. We had hoped to get some from the outer bands of Humberto but we just got a light drizzle. I’m ready for a visit to my favorite pumpkin patch and a fall chill in the air. Glad you got the Yellow Jackets taken care of. Happy Tuesday ♥

    1. Thank you, Mary! Those Yellow Jackets were a nightmare! They came into the house daily and could find any nook and cranny to enter. My handheld vacuum got a workout each day. Thank goodness that’s all taken care of.
We are hoping for rain. The drought has become quite severe.
Happy October tomorrow my dear friend!

  3. What beautiful pictures as usual Nancy, and it’s true. I believe the months are just flying by. We have guests coming in November and I’ve known since August and I kept thinking I have plenty of time to get ready because I have been enjoying the lazy hazy crazy days of summer. However, being 1 October I’ve got a lot to do so need to get busy! I’m glad you got rid of your Yellow jackets! They can really be a problem if not taken care of. Have a great glorious week! Kari🥰🏈❤️

  4. Beautiful Fall captures Nancy! I did not know that yellow jackets weren’t pollinators but I did know they are pests! Your purple Asters are gorgeous. I am a pumpkin lover and I love seeing them everywhere. Happy Birthday month!

  5. I’ve heard about that book — it sounds very good. Oh, those pumpkins! I love each and every image. I should have got my pumpkins before I hurt my foot and not sure if I can carry them this year. Well, it will be a good outing with a friend! I bet your color is coming on well — Michigan too. Such a pretty season!

    1. The color is coming but we heard it will be short. Trees are stressed here due to drought.
The book is excellent! Hope you can read it soon. Will be discussing it very soon at Book Club.
Have a great end to your September!

  6. Gorgeous, gorgeous photos as usual Miss Nancy, and it’s nice to get a reminder that, as our weather is warming, yours is cooling. It’s crazy how fast this year as sped by and I can hardly believe Xmas is now just around the corner.

  7. Thank you Nancy, such beautiful pictures, especially those of the lake and autumn foliage. I’ve never liked those terrible Yellow Jackets, but now to learn they destroy the Monarch Butterfly larve brings them to another level of dislike! Learning that you have a way to protect the Monarch larve is wonderful!
The Frozen River book sounds very interesting, I always enjoy stories based on real characters, especially ladies. What grit so many of them shared!
Enjoy October, and especially your Birthday!

    1. Thanks for following along. Those darn yellow jackets were a nightmare!
I hope you read the book. I am sure you will find it interesting. And thank you for your sweet comments. Happy October!

  8. I’m glad you had the yellow jackets professionally taken care of, Nancy! Your pictures are all so pretty and you’ve reminded me that my windows are dirty!! I hope you have a beautiful week and now I need to look up hurkle durkle!

  9. Yum, the cake looks delicious! October is also my birth month, maybe we could enjoy the cake together. It is still warm here and we desperately need rain. Yikes, yellow jackets are terrible! You certainly don’t want to step on them, they will chase you.

I love the lake views and goldenrods are everywhere down here. Can you ever have too many pumpkins, I am asking for a friend 🤣🎃

    1. Tell your friend, it is okay to have as many pumpkins as she wants! Yay! 🎃🎃🎃
I know it’s your birthday month too! We will be celebrating all month! Right?
Thank you always for all the love. Happy October! 🥳

  10. I have never liked yellow jackets, but I had no idea that they ate monach butterfly caterpillars. Your photos are beautiful and certainly warn that fall is on the way; I’m already enjoying it where I am. I agree that The Frozen River is a really good book. Not a book of fluff, it shows a good picture of the difficult times in the frontier–especially for women.

  11. Happy October, Nancy! That chocolate cake looks scrumptious. As always, your lake area looks breathtaking. Sorry, you have been plagued with Yellow Jackets. They can be such an awful nuisance. I’m glad you were able to find someone to help you get rid of them. I hope that your month of October is a happy and blessed one, sweet friend!
