Tuesday Tidbits #287 Hurkle Durkle

Do You, Hurkle Durkle?

We Hurkle Durkle.

We pretty much love to Hurkle Durkle.

The words Hurkle Durkle have become a trend on social media. People are sharing the words left and right. I never knew what it was until I googled it. Here is what I found. According to Google AI and the Urban Dictionary, “It is a Scottish saying that has been around for 200+ years. It means to stay in bed way past the time you are suppose to wake up.”

I love to linger in bed and drink tea. My to-do list can wait. How about you?

Who could resist the urge to linger and admire these beautiful flowers?

Transition

Have you sensed it? Change is unfolding gradually. In the morning, the same concert of crickets fills the air, replacing Birdsong. The sun rises later in the mornings (more time for Hurkle Durkle 😉) and it sets earlier. The evenings are getting cooler, which creates the perfect conditions for restful sleep. I am still not letting go of summer, but I think this is Mother Nature’s way of preparing me for Autumn.

Transitional Sights

When I notice these signs in nature, I am reminded that Autumn is on its way. Here are just a few of our late Summer views.

Seeing these flowers bloom, I know that fall is on its way. It is called Ligularia dentata, or
Summer Ragwort or Leopard Plant.

When I see the Cormorants hanging out in this tree or diving for fish. Fall is right around the corner!

Autumn is close by when I see Monarch Butterflies.

Queen Anne’s Lace goes to seed in late summer.

While boating, we need to plan to leave the lake a bit earlier because the lights at this place come on sooner, which means it’s too dark to stay on the lake. This past June, they came on around 10:00 p.m., but now they come on at 8:30 p.m.

The Pink Turtleheads are late summer bloomers.

Street Posts

I have noticed around Lakeside that more people are painting street posts. I believe they are constructing them, painting them, and placing them in their yards. I shared with you about our street posts in the past. You can read about them here.

The Borough planned on tearing the street posts down but Lakeside Association decided it would be fun to paint them!

Here are the new posts I have come upon on my walks. It’s always a delight to see them, New or Old!

Lunch Date with Sweet Man

We dined at a stunning open-air rooftop restaurant overlooking the Bay of Lake Erie called Oliver’s Rooftop The breathtaking views and delicious food made for a lovely lunch date. We both enjoyed the Walleye Sandwich with sweet potato fries which was our lunch and dinner.

The Bay views were gorgeous, and seeing the Bicentennial Tower is always a treat.

Our lunch and dinner. The Walleye was excellent, along with everything else.

Here is a picture of the tower from the summer of 2022.

Interesting Deer

Before I sign off, I have to share this deer we saw driving home the other day.  After sharing this photo of the deer on Facebook, a friend suggested it might be a Leucistic Deer due to its partial loss of pigment. This deer wasn’t a white albino deer but rather a taupe color, distinct from the honey-brown color of the other deer in our area. It’s quite possible that we saw a rare sighting of a Leucistic Deer.

What a sweetie!

Thank You

It was a fun week here in Pennsylvania.

As I always try to convey, we certainly appreciate all of you. Thank you for joining us for another Tuesday Tidbits.

We are wishing all of you a wonderful week ahead. Enjoy what this upcoming week brings to you. And whatever you have planned… make every day count and be thankful for your Blessings.

We hope you get to Hurkle Durkle at least one morning this week.

  1. Fall definitely seems to be rolling in a lot earlier this year. It’s good for working on projects. 🙂 I’d never heard of hurkle durkle, but I’m definitely up too early each day to participate. 🙂 Love the street posts, and applause to the talented artists. Lunch looks delicious. Have another great week!

    1. Well, I shared something new with you. I tend to be an early riser, too, but after I make my tea, I climb back into bed and enjoy it.
I am glad you enjoyed the street posts. We have many talented artists who have made Lakeside colorful!
Thanks for stopping by. It’s always good to hear from you.

  2. My dear wife Karen still works, Nance, and I rise with her on those weekdays and drive her the big half-mile down the block to her job. I like the early rising, actually, even though I stay up long enough to keep me from getting enough sleep on those days. On her three-day weekends, though, I do find myself doing the Hurkle Durkle a bit to catch up a bit.
I do feel the seasonal change coming here in Central New York, for sure. High today of 62 degrees!
    Have a great week!

    1. I know we are also chilly here today, but a warm-up is coming.
I am glad you get to Hurkle Durkle somewhat on the weekends.
      Thank you, and Happy Tuesday!

  3. Hurkle Durkle is new to me, I must be totally out of the loop. It wouldn’t work for me because my biological clock goes off between 4:30 and 5:00 every morning. We are slower in the South seeing the seasons transitioning. I love seeing the photos of seasonal transitions, especially the monarch. They usually pass through here in October and they seem to love our waning zinnias and lantana. The street posts are amazing, thanks for sharing some of them. Your dinner and view were perfect. I am happy that you and Sweet Man make wonderful memories every day. I must show the deer to Butch.

    Happy Tuesday, my friend!

    1. It’s funny you say that you are going to show the deer to Butch. When I was writing this post, I said to myself, I think Butch would like to see this sweet deer.🙂
Thank you for enjoying our week with us. We do enjoy making memories, and here they are documented on our blog!
Happy Tuesday! Happy Trails to you, dear Pam! 😊

    1. Thank you, Victoria! When I see those yellow flowers bloom and the cormorants on the lake, I say to myself, Ruh-Roh Fall is coming!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving such lovely comments every time! 🥰
Happy Trails to you on this beautiful Tuesday!

  4. This is the first I’ve heard of Hurkle Durkle, but I’m all for it! I have noticed the days getting shorter, and we do have some leaves falling…but we are still in the 90s, so it hasn’t started feeling like fall yet~ I love all the painted posts, what fun! Your lunch/dinner at the rooftop restaurant looks amazing! Have a great week Nancy~

    1. Thank you, Jenna! You and I are on the same wavelength. I just commented on your blog!
Thanks for enjoying the art posts! They make Lakeside colorful!
Hugs to you on this beautiful Tuesday.

  5. I’ve never heard of it either. I’m not one for lingering in bed after I wake up. Beautiful photos.

  6. What beautiful photos and writings from a beautiful friend. I wish more people saw the world the way you do!
    X.

  7. Good morning, Nancy! I have learned something new. I have never heard of Hurkle Durkle. It is still extremely warm here with no signs of autumn. I think its arrival is a little slower in my neck of the woods. It looks like you are having such a wonderful time at your beautiful lake home. Enjoy these last days of summer, sweet friend!

  8. I’ve hurkle durkled two days in a row — and I hope to do it more! I hadn’t heard the term but I love it. Wonderful to see all your photos. It’s beautiful in your world. I, too, have noticed the earlier darkening. I’m not ready for it — I love those long days. And while I enjoy fall, I really need more of a summer first! That deer is lovely and I love the street posts. We don’t see these here. What a pity!

    1. They were once how the roads on Lakeside were marked. So when the new street signs came, creative people painted the old posts. They sure do make Lakeside colorful. Thank you for all the love today. Happy Tuesday!

  9. Nancy I have always been an early riser…The Captain and I really enjoy being up just before first light and sitting on our Lanai sipping our coffee (or hot tea) and watching the day begin to open up with light. However, when I was ill, I did “Hurkle Durkle” a bit even though I have never heard the term….and I confess I have never heard the term “Hygee” which apparently means the good life. (I guess I need to get out more) LOL 🥴. Love the pic of the deer…so pretty and all the beautiful flowers that seem to say a season change is coming. Here in Florida, our seasons seem to run into each other but believe it or not…we do have subtle changes in weather patterns. Your pics of your luncheon date by the water as well as the night lights on the lake remind me why we love being near the water here in Florida…I never tire of seeing the Gulf of Mexico or the over 400 miles of canals here in the Cape. Have a wonderful week and enjoy the changes in temps as summer fades into Fall.🥰

    1. Kari, I am going to make you giggle. After I hurkle durkle I move on to the front porch or the sunroom to have my second cup of tea. I linger even more! lol!

Thank you for all your sweet comments, dear Kari.
      Happy Tuesday.

  10. I’ve never heard of hurkle durkle but I like the sound of the words. Only recently have I begun to hurkle durkle a bit, which feels very decadent. Mostly, though, I’m up and at it quite soon after waking up. One the three days I walk, I want to get out before the sun comes up if possible, which is getting easier as it comes up later. 🙂

I enjoyed your photos and the lunch/dinner sounds delicious but how on earth can you get that sandwich in your mouth??? 🙂 Of course in Arizona, we long for autumn and the cooler temperatures, but I remember well the joy of autumn in the Midwest.

Have a wonderful week, my friend.

    1. Oh, Janet, I asked myself the same question when I began to eat the sandwich. The top bun came off, and I used a fork and knife to cut it. 😁

The Midwest fall is coming, but I am trying to enjoy these last days of summer.
Thank-you for all the love today.
      Happy Trails to you!

  11. Hurkle Durkle!!! I especially like that this new phrase has historical origins. My dogs are aware of the changing of the seasons. They ask to go to bed earlier these days. I think the light/dark is their clock. Your lunch date was a great idea–incredible scenery and delicious food!

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet words. And yes, dogs do notice the light/dark. My yellow lab did.
I am happy you stopped by today.
      Happy Tuesday!

  12. I’m totally using that term hurkle durkle… You can’t say it and not smile!!
    Xoxo
    Jodie

    1. I know, right?
Sometimes, we say we spent way too long Hurkling and Durkling!
Hugs to you, sweet friend. Have fun in Flagstaff with the others.

  13. I had never heard of Hurkle Durkle, but I must be the anti-Hurkle Durkle-er, Miss Nancy. I cannot stay I bed. In fact, I’m always the first one out of bed regardless of the time of year. I do love to sleep in a little during Winter when the mornings remain darker for longer, but just as you can see Winter heading your way, our mornings are beginning to brightening earlier and (soon enough) it will be first light just after 4:15 am. Yeah, we don’t have daylight savings time (I think you call it daylight time) here in our state and that has its disadvantages, but just as many advantages. As usual, I love all your photos 🥰 – Have a great week Miss Nancy.

    1. I love it when the first light comes so early, but I still stay in bed.

Thanks for all the love, dear Clare. Enjoy the new season!

  14. Hi Nancy! I’ve never been able to Hurkle durkle! When the dog goes out I get up and push the coffee make button!

Loving your late summer blooms. Our flowers around here mirror many of yours. My brother is leaving in two days to drive back to Fountain Hills. We’ll see them there at Christmas this year.

I love all those painted posts! Very creative! Enjoy your waning summer my friend 🧡 🌻

  15. Great post! I learned something NEW! I’ve never heard the term Hurkle Durkle. I can’t say that I ever Hurkle Durkle, but it’s good to know there’s terminology for it, if I ever do. :o) My grandmother would always say: Get up when you wake up and wake up when you get up. Have an awesome week!

    1. I am glad you learned something new. I have never been one to jump out of bed and get ready. Even when I was teaching. I would make the tea with the lights very dim. When the tea was done, I would crawl back into bed and sip my tea. After that first cup I could then get ready for work. My day was never rushed.
One day you may try to Hurkle Durkle. Who knows??
Have a beautiful weekend my friend!

  16. Autumn has hit the Pacific Northwest….we have gone from very warm sunny days to very chilly rainy days!! Love the painted street posts….unique for sure!! Olivers Rooftop looks like a great place!!
